TX CDL Combination Vehicles Practice Test 2 2025

  • Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
  • Based on 2025 TX commercial driver's license manual
  • Triple-checked for accuracy
  • Updated for August 2025

A Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) allows you to legally drive a combination vehicle in the United States. A major requirement for obtaining a Class A CDL is passing the state’s Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. This 20-question multiple-choice exam is based on material from the official Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Handbook. To pass, you must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%). If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting, and you’ll need to pay a fee for each new attempt.

Our Free Texas CDL Combination Practice Test is scientifically designed to help you pass on your first try and avoid unnecessary delays and retake fees. Designed to mirror the structure and content of the real DPS exam, our test offers instant feedback, hints, and a proven systematic approach that’s far more effective than traditional study guides.

Topics include safe driving techniques specific to combination vehicles (avoiding trailer skids and jackknifing), air brake procedures, proper coupling and uncoupling methods, and thorough tractor-trailer inspections before and after trips.

To take the skills test for a Class A CDL, a 2022 federal mandate requires that applicants complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a provider listed in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). Additionally, you must hold a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days and use a representative combination vehicle when testing.

Earning your Class A CDL can set you up for high-demand driving jobs in Texas where freight sectors like oil and gas, agriculture, and logistics rely on skilled Class A drivers. Major employers in the Lone Star State include Schneider National, J.B. Hunt, Stevens Transport, and FedEx Freight. These organizations require Class A CDL drivers for much of their transport needs, so obtaining this credential is a giant leap in improving your overall marketability.

Additionally, most Texas combination vehicles are equipped with air brakes, so it’s highly recommended that you also take and pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test. Absent this, your CDL will carry an “L” restriction, which legally disqualifies you from driving vehicles with air brake systems, severely limiting your driving capabilities. Alongside our additional certification practice tests, we also provide an Air Brakes Practice Test to help you pass on your first attempt.
