The Hazmat endorsement allows drivers to transport materials classified as hazardous by the U.S. government. In the Buckeye State, that includes petroleum products, industrial and agricultural chemicals, explosives, and medical gases. Major employers, such as Marathon Petroleum in Findlay, LyondellBasell and Dow Chemical in Akron, Airgas and Praxair (Linde) in Columbus, and Nutrien Ag Solutions and Cargill, depend on Hazmat-certified drivers for their transport needs. Without this endorsement, you’re simply not eligible for these often higher-paying positions.
There are three major steps toward achieving this endorsement. First, you’ll need to make sure all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements are complete. Once this is done, you’ll need to complete fingerprinting and a background check with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This is often a lengthy process that can take weeks to receive the results. That’s okay because you’ll have plenty to do during that wait time as you prepare for the final step: passing the BMV HazMat Knowledge Test. This test covers regulations, packaging, handling, and transport rules for hazardous cargo. In Ohio, you’ll need at least 80% on the 30-question test to pass (Ohio CDL Handbook 2025).
With so many opportunities and the potential for higher pay at stake, you’ll want to prepare and complete this test as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our online practice tests are designed to look and feel like the real exam while covering only the material you’ll face. Other online resources often present material that is not a part of the actual test. Focusing on the direct test material is a much wiser approach to quickly obtain the endorsement. Our practice tests also provide instant feedback after each question. This method has been shown to be far more effective than other techniques, like holding assessment results until the end. Also, our experts have prepared an entire series of Ohio-specific HazMat tests. Once you’ve aced this one, move on to another one here: https://driving-tests.org/ohio/oh-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
From the hilly, forested foothills of the Appalachians in the southeast to the Lake Erie shoreline in the north, truck drivers face plenty of challenges in Ohio. Yet with these challenges come great rewards and especially lucrative opportunities (and better pay) for drivers with the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement on their CDL. Check out our other Ohio practice test categories like the Air Brakes Practice Tests and the Combination Vehicle Practice Tests. We have all you need!
Once you’ve verified that all ELDT requirements are complete, TSA clearance has arrived, and you feel prepared having worked with our practice tests, all that’s left is to visit the BMV, bring your paperwork, pay the fees, and pass the test!
