Getting a driver’s license in New York state involves several steps. Whether you’re a teenager just starting out or an adult applying for the first time, you must complete the state’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. To get a learner’s permit, you must score 70% or higher on the official written knowledge test, provide identification documents, and pay the licensing fees. If you’re a teenager, you must also get consent from your parent or guardian. You may drive with a learner’s permit under the supervision of a licensed driver at least 21 years old. Adult applicants have no required minimum supervised driving hours, but applicants under 18 must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving (including 15 hours at night).
The official written knowledge exam will be the first challenge you must overcome in the licensing process. The purpose of this test is to evaluate your knowledge of driving theory, which is thoroughly described in the official New York Driver’s Manual (New York DMV Handbook (NY Driver's Manual) 2025). All 20 questions have multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. To ace this exam on your first attempt, we recommend incorporating our practice tests into your study routine.
Our New York Driver’s Handbook Practice Test helps you master driving theory through active learning. This intuitive tool can also be used for educational purposes by users who are unfamiliar with this subject. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, as they are a natural part of learning. We will point them out as soon as they occur and give you the opportunity to learn from them. A detailed explanation of the correct answer is provided for each question. Please pay attention to this feedback and note it in a notebook or notebook app. Our automated assistant can also explain the most complex topics at your request.
Start today and dedicate the following weeks to your learning phase. During this time, you should consistently follow a study routine. Your knowledge can only be improved gradually, so you should not expect overnight results. Avoid rushing and progress at your own pace to build a strong foundation for your driving skills.
