In 1955, Michigan became the first state to require teens under 18 to take driver education. This course teaches new drivers not just how to operate a vehicle but how to think critically and react safely in real-world driving situations. Teens start the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program with Driver Education Segment 1, which requires at least 24 classroom hours, 6 behind-the-wheel hours, 4 observation hours, and a minimum score of 70% on the official written knowledge exam. After completing Segment 1, teens get a GDL Level 1 Learner’s License by visiting a Secretary of State (DOS) office with their parent or legal guardian, passing a vision screening, and providing identification documents.
Adults follow a different path. They must pass a vision test and the official written knowledge exam to receive a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), which will allow them to practice with a licensed adult for at least 30 days. After that, they must schedule and pass a skills test administered by a driver testing business to obtain a driver’s license.
The official manual “What Every Driver Must Know” (Michigan DMV Handbook (MI Driver's Manual) 2025) describes the various aspects of driving theory in detail. You should read it multiple times to learn about Michigan’s point system, traffic laws, emergency situations, and safely sharing the road.
Our Michigan Driver’s Handbook Practice Test can double your chances of passing the DOS official written knowledge test. It consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, which you can answer at your own pace. You get unlimited attempts to train as often as your schedule allows. Do not worry about a failed attempt; use this opportunity to learn from your mistakes. We provide a detailed explanation for each question to help you understand the reasoning behind the correct answer. Pay attention to this feedback and note it in a notebook or notebook app for future reference.
The licensing journey begins with your learning phase. During this time, you build the foundation of a lifelong skill. Dedicate several weeks to studying driving theory and use our Michigan Driver’s Handbook Practice Test alongside the official “What Every Driver Must Know” manual to boost your learning potential.
