For commercial driving in the great state of Louisiana, major routes include Interstate 10, U.S. Route 90, and U.S. Route 61. Interstate 10 is America’s southernmost transcontinental freeway. It runs from Los Angeles, California to Jacksonville, Florida, passing through Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Unfortunately, it is often heavily congested around Baton Rouge. U.S. Route 90 starts at Van Horn, Texas, runs near I-10, connects Lafayette to New Orleans, and terminates at Jacksonville, Florida. It serves as an alternative to the heavily congested I-10, especially for trucks carrying cargo to the oilfields or refineries along the Gulf Coast. U.S. Route 61 starts at the city of Wyoming, Minnesota and runs southward to Baton Rouge and New Orleans, generally following the course of the Mississippi River.
Before you can legally drive on these or any other roads as a commercial driver, however, you’ll need to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). That’s likely why you’re here. You know that you must obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) to practice commercial driving before you can obtain a CDL. And you know that a necessary step to obtaining a CLP is to pass the official knowledge test on commercial driving theory. But you’re concerned that you may not pass that knowledge test just by reading the official Louisiana Commercial Driver License Manual (Louisiana CDL Handbook 2025). Don’t worry. We have some other tools for you that will help you ace that knowledge test!
This free Louisiana CDL permit practice test is based on the official state manual, just like the official knowledge test. It’s up to date as of October, 2025. And it’s formatted like the official test, too. There are 50 multiple-choice questions on such topics as emergency preparedness, pre-trip inspections, and safe driving techniques. Unlike the official knowledge test, however, our automated assistant can help you by providing you a hint for each question and an explanation of the correct answer. Read the explanation carefully if you missed the question so you won’t make the same mistake again. What this practice test doesn’t have is a time limit. Take your time, not only to improve your chances of passing the test but also to learn as much as you can from the experience. For example, if you miss a question, you may want to pause and look up the information in the CDL manual before proceeding further with the test.
